Hi Meep community,

I have a question regarding the "Transmittance Spectrum of a Waveguide
Bend" example found in the MEEP Documentation. It has been demonstrated
that the incident flux can be calculated by doing a normalization run for a
straight waveguide.
My question is:
1) What if I am trying to calculate the transmittance and reflectance of a
straight waveguide, what should be the normalization structure?
2) Also what should be the normalization structure be, if I am simulating a
more complicated structure like a straight waveguide sandwiched between
DBRs and photonic crystals?
I hope my question could be easily understood, if not please let me know.

Thanks,
Abdel

Hello Abdel,

A waveguide eigenmode propagating through a straight waveguide should have
zero loss (assuming lossless dielectrics and no surface roughness) so the
transmittance is 1 and reflectance 0. This is why normalizing simulations
of other structures by the results for a straight waveguide helps to
correct for things like the frequency response of your input pulse.

I think that should answer both of your questions.

Best,
Derek
